Jay Fiedler '94 leads a star-studded - or as star-studded as the Ivy League gets - contingent of senior first and second team All-Ivy selections at the fourth annual Epson Ivy Bowl this weekend in Tokyo, Japan.
Other Big Green football players who are Orient-bound include safeties Jason Fell '94 and Jim McGeehan '94, wide receiver John Hyland '94, offensive tackle Andy McDonald '94, linebacker George Neos '94 and cheerleader Melissa Nguyen '94.
The Ivy gridders have not lost the Epson Bowl in the three previous meetings of East versus West, outscoring the apparently out-gunned Japanese team a combined 139-13.
The Bowl, which pits the top seniors in the Ivy League against Japan's best college and university players, will be on Saturday in the Tokyo Bowl (tickets are still available).
From there, Fiedler heads to Palo Alto, California for the East/West Shrine Game and then to Mobile, Alabama for the Senior Bowl. Both games will be nationally televised.
All-Tournament Teams
Brandi Jones '95 and Betsy Gilmore '94 were tapped for the All-Tournament basketball team at the Dartmouth Invitational, which was held on December 29 and 30.
Jones scored 16 points for Dartmouth in the Big Green's opening round win over Long Island. Gilmore rung up 13 points, eight assists and eight steals over the two games to help fuel Dartmouth's first win at the tournament since 1990.
At the Auld Lang Syne men's hockey tournament in Burlington, VT, also on December 29 and 30, junior forward Mike Stacchi was named to the All-Tournament team. Dartmouth limited Vermont and New Hampshire to a combined six points, but lost both games, 3-2 and 3-1.
A Month Later...
The women's hockey team plays its first game in over a month tonight at Northeastern. The women (3-3-1 overall, 0-1-1 ECAC) started the season with three straight wins, outscoring its opponents 21-5. After a 2-2 tie against Harvard, the team then lost three straight, including a wrenching 4-3 decision to tonight's host.
Northeastern (9-0-1 overall, 5-0 ECAC) is in first place in the ECAC and had been playing some outstanding hockey. Sharon Looney, who apparently plays some very sane hockey, is tops on the team in scoring with 12 goals and 8 assists. Goalie Shel DiStefano has a parsimonious .929 save percentage to go with her 1.99 goals against average.
Gym Rats or Book Worms?
Although the men's basketball team, which is off to a 1-8 start, is struggling mightily on the court, the team's six freshmen are shooting straight in the classroom. Led by Sea Lonergan's 3.9, Jason Fisher's 3.8 and a 3.7 from Kenny Mitchell, the '97's assembled a solid 3.3 GPA during fall term.
Maybe now the freshmen can start schooling their opponents.
Triple Double Take
Senior Gregg Frame's triple-double (28 points, 11 rebounds, 11 assists) against Vermont over the break was the first by a Dartmouth player since March 4, 1987, when Bryan Randall '87 scored 18 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and dished out eleven assists. Randall's performance came in the final game ever played in Alumni Gym.
Jumping the Competition
The women's equestrian team finished off its season with an appearance in the Intercollegiate Tournament of Champions in Hacketstown, N.J. on December 4. Only the top 20 teams in the nation were invited to the show, which began with a banquet sponsored by the U.S. Equestrian Team.
