Field hockey loses in overtime

After snapping a five game losing streak last Saturday against Yale, the Big Green field hockey team defeated the University of New Hampshire on Wednesday and lost to Brown on Saturday.

In Wednesday's game against UNH, Dartmouth grabbed the lead first when Cynthia Roberts '96 drove the ball across the crease and passed it to Sarah Devens '96, who tipped it in on the goalie's short side. It was her team-leading fifth goal of the season.

At the beginning of the second half, UNH was down 2-0 when Kathleen Hickey '96 scored her second goal of the season, slamming the ball past the goal after a scramble for a loose ball.

UNH scored its only goal of the game with approximately six minutes left in the game. The Wildcats were unable to score due to the strong effort by goalie Lauren Demski '96, who has not allowed more than two goals in any game all season.

Saturday, Brown snapped the Big Green's two-game win streak and escaped with a controversial win. But Dartmouth dominated the better part of the game, only to fall in double overtime.

In the waning minutes of the game the ball struck a Dartmouth defender's stick, shooting the ball into the air. Brown then immediately pumped the ball into the goal. Although it appeared to be a dangerous hit, the officials counted the score.

"We had many opportunities but we just didn't capitalize or finish them," Devens said. "Several corners and hard cross balls that we needed to tip in, we just missed, but the whole team played solidly."

Dartmouth's record now stands at a misleading 3-6 and 1-1 in Ivy League competition. Every one of those six losses has been by one goal and two have been double overtime losses. Still, the Big Green is within striking distance of the Ivy League title, behind Penn and Brown.

"Our defense has been very strong all season and consistent," Devens said. "We are able to pass and connect with one another and then under pressure feed a strong ball up to the forward line."
