From concerts to sand castles, the Programming Board has planned all kinds of outdoor activities for the term and is making it easier for students to attend off-campus events.
Since the Programming Board cannot afford to hold a concert on campus, they are subsidizing shows at the Stowe Performing Arts Center, 90 miles away in Vermont, summer Programming Board Chair Kerri Cavanaugh '95 said.
The Horde Tour, a 12 hour concert featuring the Allman Brothers Band, Blues Traveler, The Samples and five other acts, comes to Stowe on July 31. Tickets, which cost $22.50 and include free transportation, are available from the Student Activities Office.
The Programming Board is also considering subsidizing a Tina Turner show in July, Cavanaugh said.
Tickets for last weekend's concert at Stowe, featuring Spin Doctors, Soul Asylum and Screaming Trees sold out at registration in just over an hour, according to Jason Duty '95, a Programming Board member who helped sell tickets.
Patty Norris '95, who attended the concert, said the provided transportation was a luxury.
"I was really impressed that they did that ... It made it a lot more convenient for those of us without cars," she said.
The Programming Board, along with the 1995 Class Council and the Office of Residential Life is helping fund the Hopkins Center's performance of the Big Apple Circus coming to Lyme, NH on July 23.
Tickets, which regularly cost $12.50, will be sold for $2.00 and include transportation and a barbecue sponsored by ORL, Cavanaugh said.
The Programming Board will also provide on-campus musical entertainment this term by transforming the Courtyard Cafe into a coffeehouse on Thursday afternoons, Cavanaugh said.
Featuring acoustical performances by campus bands and singers, the coffeehouse will replace Hovey's Pub, which Cavanaugh said becomes too hot for use during the Summer term. The weekly coffeehouse is scheduled to begin next Thursday.
Summer Carnival, scheduled for August 7, will feature a "huge sand sculpture" which will be constructed on the Green by a professional sand castle builder, Cavanaugh said.
In addition, the Programming Board hopes to sponsor Chariot Races on the Green. Once a traditional Green Key Weekend event, the races feature students pushing homemade chariots around the Green. Cavanaugh said the Programming Board wants to make this event a Summer Carnival tradition.
The Programming Board is also sponsoring an outdoor movie for later in the summer in which a giant screen will be set up on campus. Details for the event have not yet been finalized.
