Deer runs through Fairchild window

Chased by dogs, a frightened deer smashed through a first floor window of the Fairchild Natural Sciences Center last night.

The deer sped through the building, leaped out a window in Room 18 and ran across campus to Memorial Field where it bled to death, according to Hanover Police Sgt. Walt Geisbusch.

A College Safety and Security official at the scene said a small, scrawny deer ran into and broke the window, which encloses a pendulum in the lobby of Fairchild, at about 7 p.m. leaving traces of blood and fur on the shattered glass.

The deer managed to get down Fayerweather Hill, across East Wheelock Street and onto Memorial Field which was locked, Geisbusch said.

Geisbusch said when police arrived, they found the animal wounded and bleeding profusely.

Although officials usually kill an animal in such a condition, the deer was found in a populated urban area, preventing the police from shooting their guns, Geisbusch said.

Police wrapped the bleeding deer in a blanket shortly before it died at approximately 7:22 p.m., according to Geisbusch.

Geisbusch said the deer may have come from the area around the Hanover Golf Course and Occum Pond.

The remains of the deer were turned over to the town's Fish and Game office.
