Print Advertising

Access Your College Market

  • The D is the gateway to the College’s 5,700 students and 11,500 employees, as well as the larger Upper Valley community. We know this market well and can help craft a marketing campaign specifically for your business.
  • The newspaper is available free to students daily at over 20 high-traffic locations around campus as well as in the shops and cafes of Hanover, NH. It is the most efficient means of communicating with students, faculty, staff, parents, alumni, and local residents.
  • Our special issues, published once each term, coincide with big weekends that attract thousands of visitors and alumni to town, would enable your ad to reach an even wider audience and make the most of your advertising budget.
  • Don’t have an advertisement of your own? Our in-house design team can work with you to create an ad that meets your needs at no additional charge.

Ad Sizing & Placement

Advertisements are measured by a metric of “column-inches.” One column-inch is one column wide by one inch tall. Paid placement is available for an additional charge and will guarantee the location of an ad. Full and spot color is also available for an additional charge. Standard advertisement sizes are listed below.

Web Advertising

Advertising space is available on our website at www.thedartmouth.com. The online edition of The Dartmouth is your gateway to 180,000 members and friends of the Dartmouth College community. While the print edition remains the best means of targeting Dartmouth’s student population, TheDartmouth.com can help you to reach a broader audience of alumni, parents, and friends of the community.

Our online advertisements are available in a variety of sizes and locations, with specific advertising spaces available on the home page, article pages, the search page, or the comics page. Standard advertisement sizes include the leaderboard (728x90), banner (468x60), medium rectangle (300x250), skyscraper (120x600), as well as several custom advertisement positions. Please contact the Advertising Director for more information.

We can accept online advertisements in JPEG, TIFF, PNG, GIF, or Flash format. Please send your file to the Advertising Director one week prior to posting on the website. If you need assistance, our design team can work with you to create a visual for your campaign.

Another option for online advertising is our Flyerboard, located on the homepage of TheDartmouth.com. If you would like to reserve a spot, you can do this online by clicking “Post Flyer” on the Flyerboard interface. Long-term campaign discounts are offered.

We offer a special discount on the Flyerboard for advertisers who advertise in print in the same week. We can use a print advertisement design running concurrently in the print edition. Please contact the Advertising Director for details. Flyerboard is an easy and cost-effective method of getting online exposure for your business or event.

Payment

Payment must be made in full within 30 days of invoicing. Payment options include check or credit card. New clients are required to prepay before the beginning of their marketing campaign.

Deadlines

Ad designs must be received by noon two business days prior to the desired publication date. If you require the assistance of our design team, additional lead-time is needed to ensure that we are able to design your ad to your specifications; please contact the Advertising Director for additional information.

Special Issues

Orientation Issue: The Orientation Issue is distributed on move-in day to the incoming freshmen class and their parents – a great opportunity to introduce yourself to the newest members of the Dartmouth community.

Homecoming: The busiest weekend of fall term, Homecoming weekend draws visiting alumni, parents, and other members of the Dartmouth community to Hanover from across the country and around the world.

Winter Carnival: The big weekend of winter term, Winter Carnival attracts a large number of recent alumni and visiting parents and friends of the Dartmouth community.

Menu Guide: A unique pullout in a regular issue that gives restaurants the opportunity to place an advertisement with their menu in an advertising insert that students keep as a reference for off-campus dining.

First-Year Family Weekend: A special issue distributed on the Friday of the weekend geared towards first-year students and their families. Hanover’s population increases on this weekend with the addition of more than one-thousand parents and siblings.

Green Key Weekend: This special weekend of spring term holds strong appeal for visiting alumni and is another opportunity to extend the reach of your business to a larger market of individuals in Hanover for the weekend.

Commencement & Reunion Issue: This issue is distributed on the Friday and Saturday of Commencement weekend from high-traffic bin locations and strategic positions surrounding the Dartmouth College Green. The Commencement and Reunion week is the busiest time of the year for Hanover and the surrounding Upper Valley, with an estimated 20,000 visitors in Hanover according to the Dartmouth College office of Conferences and Special Events. Market your business for exposure to the visiting community.

Freshman Issue: This extensive issue is mailed out to the incoming first-year class in August. It contains crucial information about Dartmouth for every incoming students, and it is mailed to every student’s home. This is a great opportunity to introduce your business to freshmen and their families as they make their plans for arriving on campus.

Advertising Policy

The Dartmouth is published by The Dartmouth, Inc., an independent, non-profit corporation charted in the state of New Hampshire in 1939. All editorial and business decisions are made by students, without any interference from Dartmouth College. All advertisements are subject to the final approval of the Advertising Director and Publisher of The Dartmouth.

Tear sheets and billing statements are sent monthly; accounts are due at the end of the month in which the bill was received. Advertising will not be accepted from accounts with balances 30 days past due. Advertising rates are subject to change. Payment for political ads must be made at least two days in advance of publication, in compliance with federal law. Advertising canceled past noon on the day preceding publication will be removed from the issue, but the advertiser remains liable for full payment. The Dartmouth, Inc. assumes no liability for its failure to print an advertisement or for typographical and other errors in ad material. In the event of a printing error, The Dartmouth will reprint the ad at no cost; reimbursements are only issued in the event an ad becomes untimely. Errors must be reported no later than five days after publication. Placement for advertising on TheDartmouth.com is not guaranteed.

All terms, conditions, and rates contained in this Media Kit are incorporated by reference and made part of The Dartmouth Basic Advertising Contract. The advertiser and/or agency agrees to assume full and complete responsibility for the content of any advertisement placed in The Dartmouth. Advertising simulating editorial content must run with the words “Paid Advertisement” in 10-point or larger typeface.
