Crispin Scott ’13 died while studying in Barcelona on a program not affiliated with the College, Dean of the College Charlotte Johnson said in a campus-wide email on Sunday afternoon.
A memorial will be held today at Phi Delta Alpha fraternity, of which Scott was a member, from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m., according to the email. Counseling services will be available at the memorial, Johnson said in the email.

What awful news. I am a bit aghast that whoever wrote the press release thought it was important in the first sentence to mention that the program was not affiliated with Dartmouth. I felt this was very insensitive and not important enough to warrant a spot in the opening sentence. I believe the public is more concerned with the circumstances of the death and what kind of wonderful person Crispin Scott was.

Ageed, Kathleen. This release is tacky and strangely worded. He deserves more respect.

Rest in Peace Crispin. I’m so sorry for the loss of a precious young life and my condolences go out to his family, friends and classmates. It’s unimportant why he was in Spain, only that he was.

Terrible news!! Our condolences to the Scott family. We are appalled that Dartmouth would disassociate themselves in this manner when in fact these study abroad programs are encouraged by the College.

My heart and prayers go out to Crispin’s family and friends. This is a hearbreaking loss.

This isn’t really a press release. A press release is generally given by the organization who is releasing the news. News articles or blurbs are not “press releases” per se.
It is unclear whether the Dartmouth received this exact statement as a press release. It is doubtful. The email (and actual press release) that was sent out from the administration was not started in this fashion.

This offensive press release just shows that Jim Kim and his Administration are more concerned with saving face and blaming others than the life of a Dartmouth student. We need some accountability about what really happened here and why the Propaganda Ministers are spinning this tragic story.

Terribly sad. My heart and prayers go out to his family, friends and classmates. May he rest in peace.

Actually, it looks like the original email from Charlotte Johnson indeed said, “It is with great sadness I write to inform you that we have learned of the death of Crispin Scott, Class of 2013, who was studying abroad in Barcelona, Spain, on a program not affiliated with Dartmouth.”
So, yeah, her first sentence tried to dissociate the whole situation from Dartmouth.
Nice work Dartmouth.

Please let this rest and allow the ‘13s to absorb the loss of Crispin. We’re all taught not to point fingers. This was the most tactful way that this terribly unfortunate incident could be expressed. This would be the first question by parent’s of the current Dartmouth Barcelona students.

This is indeed sad news. My condolences to the family. And when I heard of this tragedy, my first questions was whether the student was on a Dartmouth-sponsored LSA program. I was relieved to learn he was not because I was concerned of the negative impact it would have on such a great program. Again, my sympathies to all who knew and loved Crispin Scott. May he rest in peace.
