After the earthquake, a coalition of students formed Dartmouth with Japan to facilitate fundraising efforts for affected regions in the country.

The student group Dartmouth for Japan kicked off the Tsuru for Japan Project on April 10. The project is a month-long community effort to fold 5,000 paper cranes, or tsurus, to be displayed around Hanover.

Kristy Choi ‘14 folds paper cranes at the Tsuru for Japan Project kickoff event. The crane is of symbolic importance in Japanese culture. Japanese lore states that anyone who folds 1,000 paper cranes will be granted a wish.

Students and community members who attended the kickoff had the chance to “shop” for organizations to donate to and help with the relief efforts.

The Dartmouth flag flies at half-staff on April 11 to commemorate one month from the day of the 9.0-magnitude earthquake struck Japan. The College designated the Monday as a “Day of Reflection.”
