Dartmouth Dean of Faculty Carol Folt has been appointed as acting provost, College President Jim Yong Kim announced in a campus-wide e-mail today. Folt will replace Provost Barry Scherr, who is entering his eighth year in that position.

Folt will continue to serve as Dean of the Faculty while filling the provost position, Kim said in his e-mail.

Scherr, who was originally to remain provost up to June 2011, will step down to pursue his academic work, Kim announced in a campus-wide e-mail on Oct. 6. Scherr is the latest in a series of high-level College officials to announce their departures in the last few months.

Kim, in a previous interview with The Dartmouth, said he hopes to appoint a permanent provost within six to nine months, after completing an international search to fill the position.

Kim has previously said that Scherr will continue to coordinate the College’s reaccreditation process through the end of this year. Scherr is currently working on a report for the accreditation, the first draft of which should be completed in December, Kim said. At that point, Scherr will turn the report over to his successor.

Scherr will continue to serve as the Mandel Family Professor of Russian at the College.
