Editor's Note

By Jennifer Argote and Amita Kulkarni, The Dartmouth Senior Staff

We hate New Year's Resolutions. We always make them, and then we break them, and then we just feel bad about ourselves when late December rolls around and we look back on another failed year. We didn't make it to the gym five times a week, we didn't refrain from doming ourselves and (therefore) we didn't make 4.0's either. So what's the point anyway? Why not ring in 2009 with no plans in mind and see what the new year brings you? That's our plan at least. More »

Point: Resolutions - Wasting Your Breath?

By Jilian Gundling, The Dartmouth Staff

Writing an article in favor of New Year's resolutions seemed hypocritical to me, because after wracking my brain, I cannot think of a single resolution I have ever kept. I didn't get more rest. I didn't eat less dessert. I still procrastinate and, sadly, I have not yet learned how to cook, unless you count the microwave. I am a Microwave Goddess. More »

Counterpoint: Resolutions - Wasting Your Breath?

By Joanna Patterson, The Dartmouth Staff

New Year's is overrated. Don't get me wrong, I love any excuse for champagne, sequins and celebratory kisses, but New Year's remains far from my favorite holiday. It's not because of the seemingly arbitrary nature of the celebration -- Halloween sits squarely in my top three based solely on the presence of candy and costumes -- but instead it's the massive amount of pressure riding on celebrating the transition from one year to the next thatseems to spoil New Year's for me. Spotlight: Alex Schindler '10

By Sydney Ribot, The Dartmouth Staff

Editor's Note: While we jeered at freshmen circling the bonfire, Alex Schindler '10 was sweating it in Cairo. Confirming what spa owners have long claimed more or less convincingly, she assures us that a little heat is cathartic, if not downright necessary. A passionate Alex cleanses us of our Middle Eastern misconceptions with a refreshing alternative to the usual New Year's platitudes. More »
