Alumni launch new suit against College

Several Dartmouth alumni filed a lawsuit against the College last week, the second form of legal action the school has faced from its alumni in the last 14 months. The suit, filed on Nov. 18, states that the College violated an 1891 agreement to maintain parity on the Board of Trustees. The Order of Notice states that legal action has become more relevant in light of Dartmouth's current presidential search. More »

Twyman '09 named Rhodes scholar

Kathryn Twyman '09 will pursue a Ph.D. degree in physical chemistry at Oxford University as a Canadian Rhodes Scholar next year. Twyman, a chemistry and physics double major and biology minor, said she learned of her selection Saturday night and is looking forward to working closely with Oxford professor Tim Softley, who specializes in ultra-cold reactions. Gillibrand '88 could fill Clinton's seat

U.S. Representative Kirsten Gillibrand '88, D-N.Y., is being considered to replace Senator Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., in the Senate should Clinton join President-elect Barack Obama's Cabinet as Secretary of State. The formal announcement of Clinton's appointment is expected to come after the Thanksgiving holiday, according to national media outlets. New York Governor David Paterson would appoint Clinton's successor in the Senate seat soon after. More »

College presidents take pay cuts due to economy

Following the lead of Wall Street's remaining Chief Executive Officers, several college and university presidents are taking pay cuts, refusing raises and giving back to their schools in an effort to help their institutions weather the current economic crisis. These announcements came after a week of continued economic decline and the release of The Chronicle of Higher Education's annual survey of university presidents' compensation. More »

Geithner '83 to lead Treasury dept.

President-elect Barack Obama formally appointed Timothy Geithner '83 as Treasury Secretary at a news conference in Chicago on Monday. As previously reported in the Dartmouth, Geithner will be the second consecutive Dartmouth alumnus to hold the position, succeeding current Secretary Henry Paulson '68. More »

Profs. receive Fulbright fellowships

Seven Dartmouth professors received Fulbright scholarships on Monday to fund research abroad. Christiane Donahue, Ursula Gibson '76, Pamela Jenkins, David Kotz '86 and Michael Mastanduno were named Fulbright Scholars by the Council for International Exchange of Scholars and Ioana Chitoran and Jonathan Smolin received Fulbright-Hays Foreign Area and Language Training Program fellowships.
