I come not to praise Vanessa Sievers, but to bury her. Sievers, now a national flash in the pan, democratically won the local election for county treasurer. This is immediately inspiring; young people in America are finally becoming considered mature enough to run for office and better their communities. One of us can now stand up and say, "I'm a real treasurer!" But then we find out Geppetto (Bill Sharp, Grafton County's register of deeds) had a grudge, and everyone involved has been turned into an ass.

There is no more hollow term in big-time college athletics than the fabled "student-athlete."
From three-point lines and end zones across the country, "students" compete for universities that have increasingly become nothing more than training grounds for professional sports. Aside from a few outstanding individuals, almost everyone in the NCAA appears to have abandoned the core principle that academics trump sports.

Is Grafton County GOP Chairman Ludlow Flower actually serious when he claims that Dartmouth students vote en bloc and that kind of "sheep mentality" got Obama and Vanessa Sievers '10 elected? As a moderate-leaning (certainly not leftist) alumnus, I am simply stunned by this completely uninformed and obnoxious lunacy.
