College receives A- in sustainability report

Dartmouth has once again topped the 2009 College Sustainability Report Card, earning an A-, the highest mark awarded, for the third consecutive year. The Sustainable Endowments Institute, which released the list Wednesday, has published the ranking annually since 2006. The Institute grades more than 300 colleges and universities on their commitment to sound environmental practices. More »

Chief nursing officer leaves DHMC

The chief nursing officer at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, Vicki George, who oversaw 1,900 employees at the hospital, resigned from her post on Sept.16 to return to a career in consulting, according to an e-mail from a DHMC spokesman. More »

Anthony named College's first female ISTS director

Denise Anthony, chair of Dartmouth's sociology department, will take over the post of research director for Dartmouth's Institute for Security, Technology and Society, reflecting the program's initiative to integrate social science perspectives into its research. Anthony's appointment, announced last Friday, marks the first time in the College's history that a woman, or a professor with a background in social science, holds the two-year position. More »

N.H. Senate race weighs on national elections

Choudhury honored for tech research

Technology Review magazine has named computer science professor Tanzeem Choudhury to the TR35, the publication's annual list of the top young innovators under 35, announced in the publication's September/October issue. The award honors Choudhury for her work in detecting, modeling and analyzing human activities and social interaction. More »

Financial aid program kicks off

The College's new financial-aid policy, which drastically cut tuition for low- and middle-income families, took effect this fall, eliminating tuition for families that earn less than $75,000 each year and replacing all loans with grants for incoming students. Current students saw 50 percent of their loans replaced with grants. More »

Digital Humanities prof. to open new game lab at College

Hunter College professor Mary Flanagan will serve as the first-ever endowed chair of the Sherman Fairchild Distinguished Professorship in Digital Humanities, the College's dean-of-the-faculty office announced this month. Flanagan will officially arrive on campus Oct. 1 to open her game design laboratory, Tiltfactor Laboratories, and will teach classes at the College on game design, environmental art and media starting Winter term.
