Search committee drafts criteria for next president

Dartmouth's presidential search committee met for the second time on Aug. 28 and 29, the latest step in the quest to find a successor to College President James Wright, who will step down in June 2009 after 40 years at the College. The committee discussed its leadership statement, which will outline criteria for the College's next president. Members also explored ways to further involve the Dartmouth community in the search process without jeopardizing the confidentiality of potential candidates. More »

Beta interest group to hold fall rush

Beta Theta Pi fraternity is scheduled to participate in fall 2008 recruitment for the first time in 12 years, after being permanently derecognized by the College in 1996. An interest group composed of 17 upperclassmen who have expressed a desire to join Beta will be in charge of rush. More »

College presidents urge debate over drinking age

Arguing that current drinking age laws have fostered unhealthy behaviors among 18-20-year-olds, a group of college and university presidents has proposed a debate on the effectiveness of the 21-and-over alcohol consumption policy in the United States. The movement, called the Amethyst Initiative, has drawn signatories from 130 college and university presidents of higher education, including College President James Wright, and has sparked widespread discussion on the issue since it gained national media attention in August. Students campaign for '08 elections

As the 2008 U.S. presidential race heads into its final seven weeks, Dartmouth's student political organizations are preparing to stir up election fever on campus and throughout the Upper Valley. New Hampshire voters, of which a large number are independents, are expected to be courted heavily by both Senator Barack Obama and Senator John McCain's campaigns. New Hampshire, which has four electoral votes, was a battleground state in the past two elections -- the state went to the Republicans in 2000 and to the Democrats in 2004. McCain won the New Hampshire Republican primary during both his 2000 and 2008 presidential campaigns. Obama lost the state's 2008 Democratic primary to Senator Hillary Clinton by 3 percentage points. Incoming students met with hair gel, outdoor adventures

Gordon Vermeer '12 and his five fellow trippees watched, horrified, as their leaders Nicholas Edwards '10 and Kayla Eisman '09 ate what looked like animal feces off of the ground. The two trip leaders finally managed to coax a brave trippee, Andrew Mertens '12, to try it and, bracing himself, he put the apparent excrement in his mouth. More »
