Despite the overhauls to the financial aid program announced in January, Dartmouth was ranked 18th out of 368 colleges for “Students Dissatisfied with Financial Aid” in the 2009 edition of The Princeton Review’s Best 368 Colleges. The new edition, released Tuesday, also rated Dartmouth 17th on the “Colleges with a Conscience” list, and gave the College high academic and admissions ratings.

A seven-year-old girl who was HIV-positive made faces into the camera during a 2006 documentary titled “Diary of Bill Clinton and Gideon Yago in Africa,” which aired repeatedly on MTV News. Gideon Yago, who orchestrated the documentary, said he created it to increase awareness of HIV and AIDS among America’s youth.

Several College administrators met with Dartmouth Outing Club leaders Tuesday night. The meeting was held to discuss a letter written by the students requesting that the administration respond publicly to their vision statement describing a student-run DOC. Members of the DOC will continue to meet with administrators until the two groups come to a consensus on a revised vision statement.

Mankind is putting unprecedented strain on the world’s water supply, as demand for this increasingly-polluted natural resource continues to rise, journalist Marq de Villiers said Wednesday in a lecture in Spaulding Auditorium. De Villiers spoke alongside environmental engineer Alice Outwater about the need to improve management of the planet’s water resources. This week’s talk, which drew a crowd of about 300 community members, was part of the Positive Solutions lecture series sponsored by the Institute for Lifelong Education at Dartmouth, an Upper Valley adult education program.

There is no average day for the workers at Dartmouth’s carpentry shop. From locksmiths and masons to carpenters and roofers, the employees of the shop —a part of the College’s Facilities, Operations and Management office and located in McKenzie Hall —provide students, faculty and Hanover residents with a variety of often-unacknowledged services.

July 17, 8:09 a.m., Pomfret Road, Pomfret, Vt.
Hanover Police arrested the driver involved in a hit-and-run that occurred on South Main Street in Hanover on July 10. The female victim reported that the suspect’s car was backing out of a parking space and hit the rear passenger side of her vehicle as it was passing by. She told police the suspect fled the scene before information could be exchanged or the police could be called. She stated that the operator of the vehicle was an older white male. As the suspect passed by, she reported, he yelled obscenities at her, calling the woman a “dumb bitch” and “c-nt.” The victim was able to take down the suspect’s license plate number, which she gave to the police. Police contacted the registered owners, who told officers they had lent the vehicle to the suspect. The 69-year-old male was apprehended by police and arrested.
