Current and former members of the Dartmouth Outing Club submitted a letter to College President James Wright, Dean of the College Tom Crady and acting Dean of Student Life Joe Cassidy on Thursday requesting that the administration read and respond to a statement describing students' vision of a student-run DOC. The letter comes after Andy Harvard, former director of the College's Outdoor Programs Office, which oversees the DOC, left the College in mid-July. Members of the DOC, who contend that Harvard was asked to leave the College, were confused by the sudden nature of Harvard's departure and upset that student input was not solicited prior to the decision.

The College's seven-year capital campaign reached a landmark $1.1 billion this June, putting the fundraising initiative on track to reach its $1.3 billion goal by December 2009, when the drive is scheduled to end.

Over one hundred Dartmouth sophomores are suiting up and contemplating the number of marbles in an Olympic-size swimming pool to prepare for corporate internship interviews this week. Almost 60 percent of the 169 students who participated in the July 7 resume deadline received offers for on-campus interviews, according to Monica Wilson, associate director of employer relations at Dartmouth Career Services. Eleven companies accepted resumes for the July 7 deadline.

A University of New Hampshire poll released Wednesday shows that the U.S. Senate race in the state is narrowing, but Dartmouth political leaders and campaign experts say little can be concluded from the results. The poll puts incumbent Republican Sen. John Sununu, in a statistical tie with former New Hampshire Democratic Gov. Jeanne Shaheen, who was 12 points ahead in April.

The average American consumer boasts ownership of multiple credit cards, but could have minimal understanding of compound interest and how it affects their credit bill. The financial literacy and capability of Americans is the subject of a new U.S. Treasury Department study led by Dartmouth economics professor Annamaria Lusardi. Lusardi, it was announced in early July, will lead a team of researchers convened by the Treasury to gather information to be used in the formulation of economic policy.

The U.S. health care system can be reformed to cut costs and improve quality, Dartmouth Medical School professors Elliott Fisher and Gerry O'Connor told an audience of over 300 community members at Spaulding Auditorium on Tuesday. Their speech was part of the Institute for Lifelong Education at Dartmouth's summer lecture series, "Positive Solutions."
