The powwow begins with the Grand Entry Saturday afternoon on the south side of the Green with the presentation of the flags of the United States, Canada and P.O.W./M.I.A.

Aaron Sims ‘09 and Denise Abeita ‘08 welcome the community to the 36th annual powwow Saturday afternoon after the Grand Entry.

Aza Erdrich Dorris ‘11, of Ojibwa and Modoc descent, dances Jingle Dress in an inter-tribal dance, in which members of various tribes performed their respective dances together.

Cinnamon Spear ‘09 (Northern Cheyenne) and Karelle Hall ‘08 (Nanticoke) participate in one of the inter-tribal dances on Saturday afternoon.

The Eastern Eagles, winners of the weekend-long drum contest, perform Saturday afternoon.

Lydia Chammas ‘09 browses jewelry at stands on College Street where vendors sold Native American jewelry, crafts and food – Indian tacos, chili stew, popcorn, cotton candy, snow cones and frybread drenched in honey and sugar.

The Occom Ponds, Dartmouth’s student drumming group, perform Saturday.

Native Americans at Dartmouth honored Will Martin ‘08 (center) for his participation in the Native American community at Dartmouth. “I will never know what it’s like to be a Native American, but I will know what it’s like to have been accepted as a part of the native community here at Dartmouth, and that’s more than I could have ever hoped for,” he said.

Karelle Hall ‘08 and Jonathan Lesesne ‘07 participate in the Potato Dance competition.

Men compete in the chicken dance, the second song of the Grass Dance Special.

Clint Brown serves as the master of ceremonies for the weekend.

Head Woman Dancer Daryl Concha ‘11 and Head Man Dancer Ronnie Goodeagle Jr., who led the dancing throughout the powwow, are honored Sunday.

Powwow participants and members of the Dartmouth community honor Dartmouth’s Native students.

Dewey Hoffman ‘08, his mother Dee Olin and uncle Conrad Olin from Ruby, Alaska, sing Koyukon song “Yoonaane Nodaaneslet Lonh” by Young Toby of Koyukuk to honor graduating Native Americans at Dartmouth Sunday.
