Twenty-six days are all that separate this writer from joining the hallowed ranks of Dartmouth’s alumni network. As the tragic inevitability of graduation fast approaches, seniors must ask themselves, for the first time, one simple question: What kind of alumnus would you like to be once your days as a Dartmouth student have concluded? With the “War for Dartmouth” being waged throughout the Association of Alumni and the Board of Trustees, such a question has never been as relevant as it is now for the Class of 2008.

A great, unsung hero of the Civil Rights movement passed away last weekend. Mildred Loving was the plaintiff in a 1967 Supreme Court case, Loving v. Virginia, which overturned “anti-miscegenation” laws and finally granted mixed-race couples the right to marry. Mrs. Loving’s case proved to be a landmark in limiting the government’s intrusion into the bedroom. It should also provide inspiration for gays and lesbians struggling to gain the same rights that Mrs. Loving and her spouse were denied.

Tom Mandel ‘11 is on the right track when he notes the peculiarity of Dartmouth’s “ultra-fratty” vocabulary (“Concordantly Fratty,” May 6). I object, however, when he calls this language “dumbed down.” In my years as an observer of campus basement culture, I have come to realize that our speech patterns are nuanced and intellectually revealing.
