Students in Priya Venkatesan '90's Winter term Writing 5 classes will have the option of receiving credit for the class without a grade, Associate Dean of the Faculty Lindsay Whaley informed them on April 31. Venkatesan, a former Writing 5 lecturer and research associate at Dartmouth Medical School, threatened to name students in her Writing 5 classes in a civil rights lawsuit against Dartmouth in an April 25 e-mail.

Plans to construct a new dining hall to replace Thayer Dining Hall have been postponed until the release of a report by the Social Space Committee, in order to consider the committee's recommendations on alternative social spaces, Mary Gorman, associate provost of the College, said.

The Senior Executive Committee released the names of eight seniors who will serve as the 2008 class marshals, leading the procession of the graduating class during Commencement ceremonies. The SEC, the governing council for each class for five years following graduation, also announced the names of students who will act as the four class historians and one orator. Three marshals and one historian are members of the SEC.

Tabletops littered with Ghirardelli chocolate bars, slices of ham, graham crackers and mini eclairs attracted students to Collis Common Ground on Monday to commemorate International No Diet Day, an annual event to raise awareness about the adverse effects of dieting. Eating Disorder Peer Advisors and College Health Services coordinated the event at Dartmouth.

Harvard Divinity School professor Amy Hollywood analyzed conflicting interpretations of Mary Magdalene for the annual Suzanne Zantop Memorial Lecture, given in honor of Zantop, who was murdered in 2001. Hollywood originally intended to discuss Magdalene's actions during Christ's crucifixion but hoped to speak on "something more hopeful that would bring us forward in the memory of Suzanne," she said. Zantop, a professor of German and comparative literature, and her husband, Half Zantop, a professor of earth sciences, were murdered in their home in 2001.
