On his blog, Perez Hilton recently said that “sometimes people use the excuse of ‘art’ in order to get away with craziness!” A fan of ‘art’ myself, I’m a little hesitant to trust the so-called “Queen of All Media.” However, if you witnessed the atrocity of Wenda Gu’s hair curtains this past summer, or were a student at Yale this past week, you might feel like slapping your knee with an “Amen, Perez! Now pass me the crack.”

Yesterday, there was an unfortunate attack on the integrity of Dartmouth Chairman Ed Haldeman ‘70. The “whistle blower” showed his lack of integrity by injecting the issue into Hanover, an act that could only be for the purpose of embarrassment, not justice. Meanwhile, a headline-seeking “regulator” in Massachusetts tries to make something out of a matter that was investigated by the SEC and dropped.

I’m about to go against everything I usually preach, but that’s okay. It’s time for action. Carrying around my ECO mug for late-night chai, making sure I recycle that Sunja’s Sushi container and air-drying my hands after reading the latest edition of LavNotes is very self-satisfying in the name of environmentalism, but it’s not enough. Although I am the first to say that lifestyle change is a vital part of the sustainability movement, I have come to the conclusion that concurrent advocacy is necessary if we hope to create long-lasting positive environmental change.
