A group of more than fifty concerned students is speaking out against the Hood Museum of Art’s recent hip hop party given to introduce its new Black Womanhood exhibit. The party, called “Hip Hop in the Hood”, relied on stereotypical imagery associated with black women, the students alleged, arguing that the narrowness of hip hop music does not encompass global black womanhood, thus “limiting the scope of the exhibit,” Anne Kasitaza ‘08 said. The students have held two dinner demonstrations in Food Court and posted flyers around campus in protest since last Friday’s party.

Dimensions weekend for admitted students will begin today, a scheduling decision met with much contention, as events are scheduled to end just hours before the Jewish holiday of Passover begins on Saturday night. Despite some students’ irritation with the schedule overlap, this is not the first year that Dimensions has coincided with Passover.

Dartmouth admitted approximately 29.7 percent of legacy applicants to the Class of 2012, as compared to approximately 12.7 percent of non-legacies, calculations based on raw statistics provided by the Admissions Office. The admissions rate of legacy students has remained consistent in the past five years, ranging between two and two and a half times greater than the general rate, according to Maria Laskaris ‘84, dean of admissions and financial aid.

Enrico Riley, a professor in Dartmouth’s studio art department, was awarded a Guggenheim fellowship this month out of a pool of 2,600 applicants. The award will allow him to spend nine months studying the portrayal of music and dreams through painting.
