I was sitting in Home Plate on Friday getting lunch when my phone rang and a friend told me some dreadful news in a tone usually reserved for funerals and canceled Christmases. He informed me that MGMT — the band that has been rocking basements and dorm rooms across campus with their song “Kids” — had cancelled its April 12 performance at Fuel. I went into a trauma-induced state of denial and hung up the phone.

The soundtrack of our lives changes from season to season. At Dartmouth, it’s the season of skipping your 2A to lounge on the Green. Meanwhile, there’s a crop of elegant folk-pop taking root in iPods across the country. Artists like The 1900s and Jaymay are gaining attention for their pure melodies and rich harmonies. With acoustic depth and near perfect arrangements, groups like Fleet Foxes are harkening back to 1960s bands of yore. Far from “emo,” these new albums are borderline happy-go-lucky. There’s no better way to ring in the spring.

One of the first shots of the film “Leatherheads” (2008) is of a cow standing in a quiet field, chewing his cud. Seemingly out of nowhere, 11 men in leather helmets and dusty jerseys rush by, exit the frame, and then re-enter, ending up in a huge man-pile on the ground. Meanwhile, the cow simply continues to chew cud and stare straight ahead. At some points while watching “Leatherheads,” I felt like that cow.
