College to offer new study-abroad programs

The number of off-campus programs offered by the College will expand within the next few years. New study abroad options will include an engineering exchange program to Chulalongkorn University in Thailand in the 2008-2009 school year, and a collaborative foreign study program in Hyderabad, India, held jointly by the women and gender studies and Asian and Middle Eastern Studies departments and scheduled to begin in 2010. Congress expands Pell Grant program

The U.S. House of Representatives passed legislation on Feb. 7 that includes the first expansion of the Pell Grant program -- federal aid given to students from low-income families -- since 2005. The bill followed major financial aid reforms for students from lower and middle class backgrounds at schools such as Harvard University, Yale University, the University of Pennsylvania and Dartmouth. Blood drive screening excludes gay students

The American Red Cross held Dartmouth's annual quarterly blood drive on Feb. 13 and 14 in Alumni Hall. While many students participated in the drive, certain selective donation policies have sparked debates within the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered community on campus. More »

Eve Ensler honored as Visionary in Residence

Eve Ensler, author of The Vagina Monologues and an advocate for ending violence against women, spent part of her stay at the College at luncheons with students and faculty and attending women and gender studies courses on Feb. 11 and 12. After Ensler's visit to professor Susan Brison's Feminism and Philosophy class, Brison said that she overheard male and female students discussing how to solve issues of violence. More »

Lopez '08 creates 'confession booth'

To complete a project for her Figure Sculpture class, Jennifer Lopez '08 had lofty aspirations: She hoped to create an experience that would inspire dialogue on campus and provide students with an outlet to anonymously express their innermost thoughts and feelings. More »

Silsby Alcoholics Anonymous meetings draw few students

Though alcohol violations forced an unnamed student to withdraw from the College for two years, she continued to drive 100 miles to Hanover every week to attend Alcoholics Anonymous meetings on campus. When she finally returned to Dartmouth, however, she became intoxicated during Homecoming Weekend for the first time since her withdrawal from the College and was forced to separate permanently.
