New CBS sticom ‘Welcome to the Captain’ premieres tonight
In the opening montage of “Welcome to The Captain,” the neurotic protagonist Joshua Flug (Fran Kranz) drives toward his new home in the legendary Hollywood apartment building El Capitan, against a backdrop of palm-lined boulevards and sun-splashed beaches. Much like the celebrated power-pop number that escorts Josh’s travel — OK Go’s up-tempo tour de force “Here It Goes Again” — “Welcome to the Captain,” which premieres at 8:30 tonight on CBS, aims to grab your attention with a diverting charm and a pleasant wackiness. And while its success in this vein is debatable, the imperfect show does eke out just enough clever quips by itself to make you care about the tenants of this prime piece of sunny real estate — at least for now.
