Students asked alumni to explain the reasons behind Beta Theta Pi fraternity's 1996 derecognition and to clarify their plans for the organization's future at Dartmouth at the second informational session held by the trustees of Dartmouth's Beta chapter Thursday evening. Female students, who made up about half of the 12-member audience, made substantial contributions to the discussion.

College President James Wright will be honored for his efforts to aid injured veterans in securing higher education opportunities when he receives the Semper Fidelis Award from the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation this April. The recognition stems mainly from Wright's work with the American Council of Education and his influence in the creation of a program that helps wounded veterans and their families plan for their future educations and careers.

In the years following Sept. 11, 2001, the nation has seen an increase in the development of plans of emergency preparedness. Both Dartmouth and the state of New Hampshire have developed an "all-hazards" philosophy of disaster management that emphasizes programs to combat any threat, from disease epidemics to natural disasters and terrorist threats.

Local band Gusano will bring Latin beats and New Orleans funk music to the former site of the Camera Shop of Hanover on Saturday night during a dance party organized by several local art enthusiasts. The alcohol-free event, called "Kick Out the Jams," represents an attempt by the event's organizers to invigorate Hanover's nightlife and will include a number of Main Street vendors, with drink specials at both the Canoe Club and Murphy's and free coffee at the Dartmouth Bookstore.

Forty-three Dartmouth students will join representatives from other Ivy League institutions to examine issues of effective leadership at an event held at the University of Pennsylvania this weekend. The eighth annual Ivy Leadership Summit, a program arranged by Ivy Council, will bring together students, professors and leaders from a variety of fields, to discuss the skills necessary to confront public policy challenges.

The South Carolina and Florida primaries this past week led to a winnowing of the Presidential contests for both Democrats and Republicans.
In the South Carolina Democratic primary on Jan. 26, Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., won with 55 percent of the vote, followed by Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y,. with 27 percent and former Sen. John Edwards, D-S.C., with 18 percent.
