Despite a milestone set by goalkeeper Mike Devine ‘08 and a win over non-conference opponent Northern Michigan, the Dartmouth men’s hockey team had a tough winter break. After reaching the championship game of the 2007 Wells Fargo Denver Cup, the Big Green dropped a 5-3 decision to the University of Denver on Saturday, Dec. 29 and a 5-2 decision Princeton on Friday, Jan. 4.

After a long week of final exams, the majority of Dartmouth students began their winter break on Tuesday, Dec. 11. But not everyone went into hibernation right away, as the Dartmouth women’s hockey team spent the following week on campus, building their team and winning games.

While over 50 freshmen rowers from the men’s and women’s heavyweight and lightweight teams trained for over a week in Miami this winter break, the varsity teams were kept in Hanover for training after a self-imposed sanction.

The Dartmouth men’s basketball team entered the month of December with an even 3-3 record but had achieved a winning record by the middle of the month. However, they have slipped in their last three games of 2007, finishing the year with a losing record. And the team’s fortunes have not improved, as the team dropped an away contest to Harvard.

Lucy Garrec did not take Christmas day off from her training schedule. After opening her presents, the Dartmouth early decision applicant managed to get in an afternoon ski at Pineland Nordic ski facilities in New Gloucester, Maine. This kind of dedication is what got Garrec this far — she is a strong candidate for admission at Dartmouth, one of the most prestigious ski schools in the nation, with a shot at joining the Big Green in its pursuit of further NCAA titles to add to its 2007 championship.

Few teams in sports truly draw my ire. There is the Red Sox, Duke basketball, and, when they actually mattered, the Indiana Pacers. Then there’s Ohio State football. It started with the 2003 Fiesta Bowl, when the Buckeyes upset the top-ranked Miami Hurricanes in one of college football’s most memorable championship games. I have never been especially fond of the Hurricanes, but that game never sat well with me, largely due to questionable officiating that lent the Buckeyes a helping hand. Ever since, I have absolutely loathed the Scarlet and Grey.

Hope everyone had an enjoyable winter break, welcome to another term of Toe to Toe. As one can readily imagine, choosing the topic of this week’s column did not require any debate whatsoever. This evening, Ohio State and LSU square off in the national championship to round off the most unpredictable college football season of the new millennium.
