Film Society screens silent gem with a live orchestra
Upon careful consideration, I’ve concluded that it’s impossible to dislike “Lonesome.” Here is a film so sweet, so genuine, so utterly tenderhearted that you just want to throw your arms around it and squeeze. The story is an ode to love and loneliness set against the backdrop of 1920s New York, where two anonymous strangers meet and fall in love, then lose each other amidst the chaos of the urban world. Made in 1928, this lovely little film was itself lost for years, but has recently been resurrected in the form of a brand-new print that will be screened by the Dartmouth Film Society this Wednesday with live musical accompaniment by the famed Alloy Orchestra.
