Double X Chromosome Probation: When it comes to pledging rituals, College says "no girls allowed"

By Katherine Gorman, The Dartmouth Staff

It’s the most wonderful time of the year. No, it’s not Christmas, or the day that I finally get a job and stop obsessing about it. It’s that special time at Dartmouth when certain sophomore men sprout mustaches, resurrect their preschool Power Rangers lunch boxes, decide to wear the same clothes for months on end, or mysteriously lose all of their hair. THE PLEDGE PSYCHE: How hazing gets in your head

When I was just a wee, innocent prospie, visiting Dartmouth to decide if it was the school for me, I saw my first glimpse of the pledging process. I watched a naked frat boy running laps around a fetid basement and then crashing into a huge pile of Keystone Light cans, crushed plastic cups and torn Keystone boxes. Book: “Gulag: A History” by Anne Applebaum The often belittled story of the Gulags, the soviet concentration camps, has never been told with such piercing accuracy as in Anne Applebaum’s “Gulag: A History.” A 2004 Pulitzer Prize winner, Applebaum skillfully juggles her sources, raising arguments so precise and definitive that they’re hardly arguable. This adroitly composed scrutiny of soviet homicide, is a must-read, and not just for history buffs. — Mat Grudzien More »
