Death penalty sought for suspects

Late Thursday afternoon -- nearly three and a half days after the brutal murders of incoming freshman Hayley Petit and her mother and sister in their home in Cheshire, Conn. -- New Haven State's Attorney Michael Dearington filed six capital felony charges against each of the defendants, Joshua Komisarjevsky and Steven J. Hayes, and announced that the state plans to seek the death penalty for both. More »

Wright named 'New Englander of the Year'

The New England Council named College President James Wright "New Englander of the Year" on Thursday. Wright's highly publicized work with U.S. Veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan was the major impetus behind his selection, according to Council President James T. Brett. Wright shares this year's distinction with Congressman Barney Frank (D-Mass.) and Peter Meade, executive vice president of corporate affairs at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts. More »

Giving to College reaches record mark

The Dartmouth College Fund received 40,906 donations, raising $159.1 million -- a record $39.1 million came in the form of unrestricted gifts -- over the course of the fiscal year that ended June 30, 2007. According to Vice President for Development Carrie Pelzel, the high level of participation reflects the ongoing efforts of the Campaign for the Dartmouth Experience, which aims to raise $1.3 billion by December of 2009. Petit remembered as an athlete, role model

Friends and family members are mourning the death of 17-year-old Hayley Petit, who was to matriculate as a member of the Dartmouth Class of 2011. Petit, along with her mother and sister, Jennifer Hawke-Petit, 48, and Michaela, 11, was murdered when two men invaded the family's home in Cheshire, Conn., an upscale suburb of New Haven, on Monday. Sophomores begin corporate recruiting

One hundred eighty-four students had submitted over 1,400 resumes through Monstertrak, Career Service's online resume submission portal as of Tuesday. This represents a huge jump in student interest from previous Summer term recruitment. This summer also saw a slight increase in the number of employers who were interested in recruiting Dartmouth students, bringing the total this year to around 20. The firms in attendance represented the fields of finance, consulting, media and law. Finance firms were the most heavily represented. More »

Copper mines are forbidden fruit

The Elizabeth Mine in Strafford, Vt., better known to Dartmouth students as the Copper Mines, is a staple destination for the sunny afternoons of sophomore summer. Located about 20 miles from Hanover, the abandoned mine is the site of one flooded quarry, which is surrounded by a series of ledges from which students leap into the bright, blue water below. July 14, 7:43 a.m., Lyme Road Hanover Police was called after a 20-year old female Dartmouth student reported a suspicious man driving around campus. The student reported having seen the man repeatedly drive by her and noticed that he appeared to be fondling himself. The 53-year old man was stopped by Hanover Police and arrested for indecent exposure and lewdness. More »
