College to build $94 million bio building

The College is demolishing three buildings near Dartmouth Medical School this summer, as part of the first phase in a planned $94 million construction project to provide a new home for the biology department. The new Life Sciences Building is intended to fix inadequacies in Gilman Hall, which currently houses the department and contains only one classroom and a small number of teaching laboratories. ORL expands Iraqi Kids Project

The end of a Dartmouth term always brings with it tons of abandoned clothing, toiletries and school supplies — much of it still useful. Three years ago, Meredith Wilson ‘07 started the Iraqi Kids Project, which recycles discarded items by shipping them to Iraq for soldiers to distribute to civilians. This spring, the project underwent an expansion when the Office of Residential Life approached the group about allowing them to oversee the collection of donated clothing, shoes and stuffed animals, while leaving the sorting to the Iraqi Kids Project volunteers. Second College Grant celebrates 200 years

Dartmouth celebrated the bicentennial of its acquisition of the Second College Grant on June 18. The College marked the occasion with festivities at the Grant over the weekend that included hiking, canoeing and a lecture series about the Grant’s history. About 150 people gathered at the Grant over the weekend, including current students, alumni, members of the local community and representatives of the state bureaus that work with the College on issues regarding fish and game, wildlife and forestry. Mexican teachers learn Rassias Method

Dartmouth sophomores taking “drill” as part of their language courses won’t be the only ones on campus learning from John Rassias’ innovative method of language instruction; a group of educators from Mexico will also endure the Rassias Method’s quick-fire language sessions this week, as they participate in a program designed to improve English language instruction in low-resource Mexican schools. Alumni, faculty help restore Biloxi

Nearly two years after Hurricane Katrina devastated the Gulf Coast, the Tucker Foundation sent another two service trips to Biloxi, Miss., during interim. While Tucker regularly sponsors programs for Dartmouth students to volunteer and participate in hurricane-related relief efforts, this trip marked the first time that a trip comprised of Dartmouth alumni, faculty and staff worked there. Associate Provost and Dean of the Tucker Foundation Stuart Lord, Frederica Ghesquiere ‘04 and Stan Colla ‘66 Tu’86 led that trip, while Raymond Rodriguez ‘09 and Amy Quan ‘09 led the student trip.
