After I received several Facebook group invitations just hours after campaigning had officially begun last week, it was clear that the race for next year’s Student Assembly leadership was well underway. It never ceases to amaze me how passionate and serious the candidates are about the Assembly. But of course, it does make sense since the race provides students with an outlet and an organization that can bring about change on campus. However, I feel that this campaign is also an example of the lack of credibility Student Assembly sometimes has, since some candidates have decided to run with platforms that are pure fantasy. Student Assembly needs this race to be run by candidates with honest platforms and transparent campaigns if it is to regain the students trust and move forward.

I am sure you have your remaining alumni set for your three-part series (“ROTC alum commands army base in Afghanistan,” May 2; “‘Adventurous’ graduate trains, may head to Iraq,” May 1), but on the outside chance you are still researching, look up Mike Lauria ‘05. He is currently enrolled in the U.S. Air Force pararescue program, the most intense and longest training system which produces only a handful of high risk technical combat rescuers every year. Mike has completed the indoctrination course, SERE survival school, Static Line parachuting school and basic dive school. He is currently earning his paramedic status in New Mexico. In July, he heads to HALO jump school before all this culminates in “PJ University.” It’s all very intense and pretty unique within itself.

While I agree with Ben Selznick ‘07 that the drinking age should be lowered to the age of 18, I cannot agree with his arguments to do so (“Make it 18‚” April 30).
