Nine colleges from across the nation descended on Thompson Arena this past weekend to compete in the U.S. Intercollegiate Team Skating Championships, and for the fourth consecutive year, the Dartmouth figure skating team has pulled through with the national championship. In an all-around effort in which each Dartmouth skater contributed points to the victory, the Big Green overcame strong competition from the University of Delaware and the University of Indiana to secure their fourth title.

In “Blades of Glory,” the Olympic figure skater played by Will Farrell insists that the only song to which he and his partner will dance is “Lady Humps” by Black Eyed Peas. The Dartmouth figure skating team, however, takes a more traditional approach which has served them well since the team was founded in 1997 by Amy Stetson ‘00.

The Dartmouth men’s lacrosse team kept things close in the early goings against No. 1 Cornell, but the Big Red responded with a merciless attack fueled by Big Green mistakes to cruise to a convincing win. The 17-3 rout extends Cornell’s win streak over Dartmouth to 10 straight games, a streak that dates back to 1997.

The Dartmouth men’s tennis team lost consecutive away matches this past weekend. On Friday, Dartmouth was shut out by the Princeton Tigers, and only narrowly avoided another shutout against the University of Pennsylvania on Saturday. A week ago, the 14th-ranked Dartmouth women’s lacrosse team fell into a 5-1 hole against Cornell before using a six-goal run to erase any thoughts of an upset. This past weekend featured a reversal of roles, as the Big Green got a taste of their own medicine from Ivy League frontrunner and sixth-ranked University of Pennsylvania. Early in the game, the Big Green scored three quick goals and it looked as if there could be an upset brewing. However, the Quakers’ offense sprang to life and roared back to rip off five straight goals en route to a 13-8 victory at Franklin Field in Philadelphia, Pa. This was the Quakers’ first win against the Big Green since 1991.

Such was the transition that tennis players Mary Beth Winingham ‘10 and Jessica Adler ‘10 had to make this past year. I recently had the pleasure of sitting down with the two freshmen to discuss everything from fashion to team dynamics and personal history.

__Biggest Surprise of the Season:__
The surprise of the season has to be the Atlantic Division Champion Toronto Raptors. Not given much of a chance early in the season, the Raptors have impressively put together their finest season in their twelve-year history. Led by Chris Bosh and TJ Ford, who they were wrongly criticized in trading for, the Raptors deserve a great deal of credit, regardless of how weak the rest of their division has been this season.

Utah Jazz. It’s good to see the Jazz finally back, winning their division for the first time in the post-Stockton/Malone era. After missing the playoffs for three consecutive seasons, Utah is poised to make a run this year in the postseason. Carlos Boozer’s 21 points and 12 rebounds per game anchor the rock solid Jazz, who don’t feature any household names but are still one of the top eight teams in the league. With Boozer and Mehmet Okur in the front court, and Deron Williams in the midst of a career year directing traffic from the top of the key, the Jazz are a legitimate threat to go deep in the playoffs after missing the postseason altogether just a year ago.
