Audiences catapult talentless ‘Idol’ to farcical fame

There are many things in this world that are so hideously awful they downright defy you to love them. Chief among these are the ephemeral music fads whose popularity (or lack thereof) separates those who are in the loop from those who are not. Think Billy Ray Cyrus and his mullet, or Michael Bolton and his tight blonde curls. It’s no coincidence that the so-bad-it’s-good syndrome pervades music culture like a sickness you don’t mind having. Therefore, it is fiendishly appropriate that the granddaddy of so-bad-it’s-good music competitions, American Idol, brings us the latest in line of pop culture tumors — Sanjaya Shekar Malakar, who is half-Indian, half-Italian, and 100 percent-“Oh my God, did you see what Sanjaya did on Tuesday?” More »
