Let’s be the Dartmouth Mascots

To the Editor:

I notice that support for the Dartmoose as an official mascot is once again gaining momentum ("Letting Loose the Dartmoose," Mar. 5), but student leaders are concerned about possible tension with the alumni. In the interests of allaying those concerns, I submit a proposal for bridging the gap: The Dartmouth Mascots.

We could be known as the Fighting Mascots, or perhaps the Fighting Green Mascots, though that would significantly restrict imagined Mascot representations to only green things. The Mascot has none of the offensive connotation of the Indian; it has no offensive characteristics whatsoever! This makes it perfect for these politically correct times.

The Co-op could sell T-shirts that say "Mascot goes here" or, alternatively, "This space intentionally left blank."

Uncertainty regarding exactly what The Mascot is could even lead to the revival of an old school cheer, albeit with a bit of punctuation change: Wa! Who? Wha?

I can't guarantee all the alumni will rally around this proposal, but some of us will.
