An all-male secret organization that is unrecognized by the College and calls itself the Phrygian Society is striving to “fight against the heavy hand of the administration,” according to documents obtained by The Dartmouth. The society — which consists mostly of politically conservative students, including leaders of conservative campus publications — has held meetings with members of the Board of Trustees and briefly established a shell corporation to receive donations from alumni.

Money will assume an unapologetically important role in the upcoming trustee election since the Alumni Council approved open campaigning in the Fall term. The decision follows the failure of the proposed alumni constitution this fall, when many complained that petition candidates could skirt the anti-campaigning rules in order to collect signatures.

In what may represent one of the final steps in the Student Assembly reform controversy, an amendment to the Assembly’s Constitution preventing “non-germane” amendments was passed at Tuesday night’s meeting. This change will serve to close a current constitutional loophole used by Adam Shpeen ‘07 in an attempt to bring forth reform legislation this winter.

A change to the Organization, Regulations and Courses manual narrowing the requirements for a course to fulfill a Technology and Applied Sciences distributive requirement passed approval by the Committee on Instruction and is awaiting a vote at a faculty meeting for the changes to be implemented. The changes are meant to emphasize the study of technology itself in TAS courses, not just its utilization.

In an attempt to discourage students from using College housing as a backup plan, the Office of Residential Life has changed their policy, deterring applicants from changing their housing plans at the last minute. At the same time, certain landlords throughout Hanover have noticed a decline in interest from would-be tenants.
