The announcement that gender-neutral housing will be an option for Dartmouth students next fall is a victory for the entire student body. The status quo policy can hurt students’ residential lives by mandating their roommates possess a certain characteristic that is not necessarily integral to having a successful roommate relationship. Addressing Sexual Assault in Frats

Max Bryer ‘08 missed the point about sexual assault (“An Unfair Generalization of Frats,” Feb. 22). He attempts to disassociate Greek culture from the phenomenon of sexual abuse at Dartmouth by claiming that the individuals who commit sexual crimes are going to do so regardless of a Greek affiliation. He is under the impression that were there to be no Greek system, the same “schmucks” will be coming to Dartmouth and will be prone to the same tendencies of objectification, exploitation and assault in a different, Greek-less environment. To the Editor: After reading various heated responses to Nathan Bruschi’s commentary (“Affirmative Action Too Skin Deep?,” Feb. 13), I feel compelled to add a moderate and impartial position to the fray. While Bruschi’s comments were insensitive and I imagine somewhat satirical, there is some merit to his argument. More »

Smoking ban makes sense

To the Editor: I am curious if Jon Wisniewski ‘07 intended his column against the proposed ban on smoking in New Hampshire restaurants as satire (“Not a Fan of a N.H. Smoking Ban,” Feb. 22). His comment that employees of such establishments who don’t want to breathe second-hand smoke should “bug their bosses” to change the policy smacks of either a bad joke or of someone who has never held a job in which his boss wasn’t mommy or daddy.
