Kucinich: cut defense spending, recall troops

Criticizing the government’s current focus on war as a constraint on its power to deal with social issues, current presidential hopeful and former presidential candidate Rep. Dennis Kucinich, D-Ohio, spoke to a packed Hinman forum Sunday night in an event sponsored by the Rockefeller Center and the Dartmouth College Democrats. The congressman used the time to highlight his own plan for the Iraq conflict and to touch on a variety of issues ranging from universal healthcare and education to environmental policy and civil liberties. Black Panther defends group’s history

Fair trade bananas debut at Home Plate

Beginning Monday, all bananas sold at Home Plate will be ones certified as “fair trade,” a change that resulted from collaboration between Dartmouth Ends Hunger and Dartmouth Dining Services. The price of Home Plate bananas will rise from 75 to 85 cents, but the other dining venues on campus will still offer non-fair trade bananas at the original price. More »

University of Illinois ditches Indian mascot

The University of Illinois announced that it would stop using its Native American mascot, Chief Illiniwek, at its Urbana-Champaign campus after the last men’s home basketball game on Feb. 21. Chief Illiniwek has been the university’s mascot for the past 80 years. More »

A conference organized by religion professor Susannah Heschel examining movements of Jews and Muslims in the modern world, “Transnational Migrations of Identity: Jews, Muslims, and the Modernity Debate,” was held Thursday, Friday and Saturday. More »

DMS holds ‘Dance for a Dream’ fundraiser

Participants twisted, boogied and gyrated in the name of public health during the first annual Dartmouth Medical School Dance for a Dream, held Saturday in Alumni Hall to benefit the Kigutu Community Health Clinic in Burundi. The clinic is a project of Village Health Works, a public charity set up by native Burundian Deo Niyizokiza DMS’08. More »
