Praise for Parkhurst’s Internal Review

The release this past week of the Administrative Working Group’s reports on administrative policies shows a marked increase in the transparency of Parkhurst. Shattering the perception that the administration insulates itself from outside criticism, the group admitted areas for improvement in the administrative structure. In implementing the necessary reforms, Parkhurst will clarify the College’s hiring procedure and pull together the disorganized administrative organs of Dartmouth into a more effective body. More »

Dartmouth Debut of Edwards ‘08

“‘If you had been elected vice president in 2004,’” asked The Daily Show’s Jon Stewart, “‘who would you have shot in the face?’” With that statement, Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards opened his speech, which was held in Alumni Hall at the Hopkins Center last week. While the tone certainly took a more serious turn after that, it fit in well the image that Edwards is trying to portray: With his somewhat casual wear, his referencing of popular television shows, watched mostly by college students, Edwards is building up his identity as a man of the people. Yet for all his charm, I felt that this presidential candidate was missing something. More »

Conscription isn’t the answer

To the Editor: In his Feb. 8 column on the war on terror (“Undemocratic War for Democracy”), Max Bryer ‘08 argues that the Bush administration should have “call[ed] on average Americans to bear the costs” of the war. He complains that the American people “are never called upon to be the instruments of the president’s policy,” for instance through a draft, and he insists that “a more drastic mobilization of the American people is necessary.” More »

Responsible Excess?

Winter Carnival is a weekend of excess. Students, chafed by the stress of midterms, take three or four days to bask in the warmth of carefree winter fun and gluttony. This year, however, with Winter Carnival close on the horizon, Associate Director of the Collis Center and Student Activities Eric Ramsey sent a message to representatives of Dartmouth’s fraternities and sororities reminding them that there is a limit to their winter excesses after all.
