Two players quit prior to the start of winter practices and were followed by four others. With twenty-six players remaining on the roster, the six former players made up almost twenty percent of the team. More »

Ninety-seven years of history: Winter Carnival still lives on

By Allie Lowe The Dartmouth Staff It isn’t often that a letter to the Editor of The Dartmouth sparks a tradition that endures for some 97 years. But in 1910, the words of one impassioned note were enough to establish one of Dartmouth’s most storied occasions — an event marked by a celebration of the great outdoors, the occasional celebrity visit, consistently notable parties and an unusually high level of debauchery, even by college standards. Role of women at Carnival changes with dawn of coeducation

By Amanda Cohen, The Dartmouth Staff

The sorority-sponsored events of this year’s Winter Carnival are a far cry from certain antiquated Carnival traditions, which in many ways embraced women themselves as the festivities. Decades ago, when Dartmouth was all male and even more isolated than it is today, the annual pilgrimage of thousands of high school and college girls to Hanover each winter caused quite the stir. The Friday Quickie

By Abi Medvin, The Dartmouth Staff

After playing hard to get all through December, it seems Old Man Winter has finally decided to put out, and just in time for Winter Carnival. Phew. So, this being the Winter Carnival issue, this article is supposed to have something to do with winter, and, this being the sex column, this article is supposed to have something to do with sex. One would think that plunging temperatures would be a significant deterrent to the removal of ones clothes. Though there is some discord, many Dartmouth students take the cold in stride. As one male states, “More winter clothing to take off means hotter foreplay.” More »

Heorot laments probation during its busiest weekend

For decades the brothers of Chi Heorot fraternity have thrown their annual Winter Carnival Kountry Kwencher party, which even included the appearance of live farm animals, bales of hay and other festive decorations in the past. While the presence of pigs in the basement — literal ones, that is — has ended in recent years, the western-themed party has continued to be an important part of the Carnival’s events until this year. As a result of a keg violation in November, Heorot, which typically sees most of its party traffic during Winter term, will not be able to host its infamous carousal this weekend. More »

Alumni reminisce, recall lost Carnival traditions

By JR Santo, The Dartmouth Staff

Throughout the 97-year history of Winter Carnival, the celebration’s hallmark events have evolved, with the weekend’s essence differing for each class of students. Some alumni, reflecting on the Carnivals they experienced, believe that the weekend in its current state lacks the level of student spirit and Greek involvement that they saw as students. While the weekend has always included social events, athletic competitions and entertainment, these various features have shifted since the occasion began. Many alumni lament over events which were discontinued due to safety reasons as well as other traditions which have simply died out. More »

WC fashion: how to stay warm and still look cool

By Joanna Patterson, The Dartmouth Staff

By the time Winter Carnival rolls around, students have learned to reconcile fashion and sub-zero temperatures, removing flip-flops from their basement attire and finding that one perfect niche for their black North Face fleece. With an abundance of theme parties across campus this weekend, however, the celebration presents a unique fashion challenge for Dartmouth students: how to maximize appropriate costumage while minimizing frostbite. Frostbite, hypothermia among Winter Carnival health risks

By Grace Wyler, The Dartmouth Staff

When Kari Cholnoky ‘10 volunteered as a guide at the Special Olympics one Saturday morning this winter, she never expected that her good deed would leave her unable to move her face for the rest of the day. Temperatures had dropped to -20 degrees Fahrenheit at the Skiway and after spending the majority of the day volunteering outside, she realized that the muscles in her cheeks stuck when she smiled. Kari had gotten a mild case of frostbite. More »

Other schools’ winter festivals mimic College tradition

By Zach Swiss, The Dartmouth Staff

Thanks to the beauty of the trimester system, Dartmouth’s calendar calls for three big festival weekends per year. (Apologies to Tubestock, the recently-defunct fourth celebration: you will be sorely missed.) While many colleges on a traditional semester hold their major weekends in the fall and spring, several nearby schools embrace the bone-chilling temperatures of a New England winter with their own annual incarnations of a winter carnival.
