The outgoing 2007 Directorate of The Dartmouth announced Saturday that Phil Salinger '08 and Eddie Kalletta '08 will take over as editor-in-chief and publisher of The Dartmouth beginning next winter.
Kalletta and Salinger will assume a staff of nearly 200 undergraduate students and self-amassed assets of over $600,000.
Salinger, an economics major from Newton, Mass., and a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity, is currently studying in Rome on an Italian LSA. He has written for The Dartmouth since his freshman fall and served as a news editor his sophomore year.
"I think I am taking over at a period of growth and excellence at The Dartmouth, and I hope to advance both in the next year," Salinger said. "We have some projects that have either recently been started or are soon to start, each of which I think can continue the strides The Dartmouth has made over the past few years."
Kalletta, a government major from New York City, began working for The Dartmouth's business section as a freshman and was promoted to advertising director his sophomore year. A member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity, he is currently on an off term working for Slack Barshinger, a leading Chicago-based advertising firm.
"I'm excited about the upcoming year," Kalletta said. "Everyone has high expectations and are expecting great things from each other, and we are going to live up to that."
Incoming Executive Editors Rebekah Rombom '08 and Elise Waxenberg '08 will replace current editors Caroline McKenzie '07 and Benjamin Taylor '07. Jennifer Garfinkel '08 and Stuart Reid '08 will also take over for outgoing Managing Editors Joanna Zimelis '07 and Laura Glickman '07.
Eric Crawford '08 will replace Charlie Kettering '07 as The Dartmouth's finance director, while Alan Han '08 will assume the position of circulation director and Thomas Sheridan '08 will succeed Jacques Hebert '07 as advertising director.
For the editorial section, Ben Reed '07 will hand over the sports staff to juniors Evan Meyerson and John Mitchell. Current opinion editor Julia Bernstein '07 will be replaced by Sara del Nido '08 and David Rothenberg '08. In addition, Meredith Fraser '08 will succeed Frances Cha '07 as arts editor.
Nova Robinson '08 and Lauren Wool '08 will lead the photography staff while Kelsey Blodget '08 and Emma Haberman '08 take over The Dartmouth Mirror. Dan Duray '08 will continue his role as Hanover bureau chief.
"I expect greatness from the editors of the Class of 2008," outgoing Editor-in-Chief Kevin Garland '07 said. "Having worked with each of these talented students over the past two years, I look forward to watching them take the reigns from the seniors."
Outgoing Publisher Dax Tejera '07 said he is confident about the 2008 Directorate and the organization's future.
"The D's 2008 class is a highly-talented group," Tejera said. "The D stands to claim enormous success from their leadership."
The new members of the 2008 Directorate were chosen by the outgoing Directorate from an application process that included a series of essays questioning their involvement and dedication to The Dartmouth.
Garland noted the contributions of the newspaper's current Directorate, as he reflected on his time at The Dartmouth.
"All of the editors this year have toiled to improve every aspect of the newspaper while focusing on better staff dynamics, and for that I am thankful," Garland said. "On top of all our committed editors, the new directorate structure has allowed for a stronger concentration on content and production. I will miss working and spending time with the talented and personable members of the 2007 Directorate."
Tejera reflected on the enormous change that has taken place over his four years at the newspaper.
"When I was a freshman writer, we still weren't a fully digital operation," he said. "Today, not only are we at the forefront of digitial publishing, but we've outperformed the industry in financial successes that leave us poised to continue to safeguard and strengthen the legacy of this newspaper."
Both Tejera and Garland identified the nature of The Dartmouth's online presence as a high priority for the incoming Directorate.
"As more and more of our readers turn to TheDartmouth.com, we have to make sure we give sufficient attention to our online edition," Tejera said. "We can't take anything for granted."
"Five years ago editors thought we would no longer have a print edition in 2010," Garland said. "But I think there will always be people interested in picking up a physical copy of The D. What future editors should focus on is that the online section can offer new and interesting content to attract a larger audience."
The Dartmouth has worked to overhaul the infrastructure of the online edition to offer new content and multimedia options in the winter, Tejera and Garland said.
Tejera also noted that the incoming Directorate needs to ensure that the newspaper's online version does not sacrifice the integrity or prominence of the print edition.
Along with announcing the new leadership staff, the current Directorate used the changeover ceremony to recognize staff members' contributions to the newspaper.
Astrid Bradley '09 received the Staff Writer of the Year award, Kawakahi Amina '09 was awarded the Staff Photographer of the Year award and Lauren Hartz '09 was given the Outstanding Business Manager award. The Ira T. Holmes award for strong contribution from a freshman staff member was given Will Schpero, Allyson Bennett, Allie Lowe, Alicia Modeen, Joe DeBonis, Jacob Baron, Heita Miki, Matthew Ritger and Thomas Bukowski.
