Known to students from the start as the main celebratory weekend of the year, Homecoming draws many former students back to Dartmouth to enjoy the festivities. Each year, hundreds of alumni return to Hanover to revel in Homecoming events and reconnect with their alma mater.

Eager members of the Class of 2010 looking forward to taking part in their first Dartmouth tradition may be surprised to learn that “Homecoming’s” roots technically only extend to the 1980s. It was only then that the College officially dubbed the weekend “Homecoming”.

As freshmen jog around the bonfire on Friday night they will be participating in a Homecoming tradition whose history is a tale wrought with comedy, perseverance, and tragedy. The Homecoming weekend bonfire, which has endured since 1895, bears the official name “Dartmouth Night”.

As the members of the Class of 2010 look forward to lacing up their running shoes for the Homecoming bonfire, a dedicated group of individuals are busy constructing plans to maintain the safety of everyone who attends the traditional festivities. Behind every fiery emblem of school spirit and pride, stands a mixture of trained professionals, public security, dedicated administrators and passionate students that has made make the bonfire construction and execution a safe reality every year for the past 109 years.

For those in need of a recess from participating in the bonfire festivities tonight, Programming Board is sponsoring a candy night “bonfire break” scheduled to take place at 8:30 p.m. in Collis Common Ground. In addition, a midnight breakfast will be available on Saturday night in Common Ground at 11 p.m. Both events are free for Dartmouth students and visitors.

Despite threats of three terms of probation, arrest by the Hanover police and a fine of up to $500, daring freshmen continue the Homecoming football game tradition of running down from the home stands, rushing across the football field and storming the opposing side’s bleachers during halftime.

Perhaps it’s the danger inherent in a thousand people, many of whom will be heavily inebriated, running around a 60-foot inferno, or maybe it’s the inconvenience of a handful of them, also heavily inebriated, rushing the football field at halftime; whatever the reason, Safety and Security will be taking extra precautions this Homecoming weekend.

Thursday night festivities mark the unofficial commencement of Homecoming weekend for many students. With Friday’s bonfire, Saturday’s football game, and all of the activites in-between, it is no wonder that students do not want their scheduled Friday classes to interfere with their celebration.

Merritt Jenkins ‘10 carried two enormous wooden numbers on his way to the River residential cluster on Saturday, Oct. 7. He was upset, he explained, because he had wanted to make the 1 and 0 of the bonfire three-dimensional, with hollow tops, so he could fill the top of each number with chemicals that would combine to make green smoke. Sadly, he was forbidden, and had to settle for the one-dimensional kind instead.

Homecoming weekend arrived more quickly than we could have thought. In no time, the first weeks of class passed by, Greek rush hit and we barely had time to blink before Homecoming fell upon us. It’s here now, and we couldn’t be more excited to celebrate some of Dartmouth’s oldest traditions.
