A series of debates, interactive discussions and formal presentations entitled "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly: A Series on the Alcohol Culture at Dartmouth," were held throughout the week to stimulate discussion about the positive and negative issues of drinking. Topics included whether or not drinking was a problem on the Dartmouth campus, the effects of drinking on minority cultures, whether the drinking age should be changed and alcohol and its relationship to sexual violence. Active Minds, Drug and Alcohol Peer Advisors, Sexual Assault Peer Advisors, and the C. Everett Koop Scholars were among the event's sponsors.
Rauner Special Collections Library has acquired an ancient manuscript known as The Brut Chronicle, thought to be the earliest prose account of England's history, which was transcribed by hand in approximately A.D. 1430. Only 181 copies of the Brut manuscript survive today, less than a dozen of which are housed in the United States. This is the first time this copy of the manuscript has ever been made available to the public. Rauner's acquisition of the manuscript will augment its collection, as it is the library's first English literary text from this time period. The acquisition was made possible by the William L. Bryant Foundation Library Fund, established by William L. Bryant '25.
The Rockefeller Center will host two events this weekend to address issues of educational inequality in America. At 4:00 p.m. on Friday, a panel of Dartmouth alumni with careers in education will participate in a discussion led by David Herszenhorn '94 on the American educational system. The event will be followed by a brief reception with refreshments. On Saturday at noon, Dennis Littky, Founder of the Met School in Providence, R.I.,will give a keynote address. Littky will discuss the topic of innovations in school reform, followed by a lunch and discussion. The Nancy Boehm Coster Public Policy Career Encouragement Program is sponsoring the event.
