To the Editor:

I was delighted with Zach Swiss's timely article ("Crowded departments gain profs.," Feb. 9) describing the new professors in the economics and government departments. However, it left the impression that our three new hires in economics this year have made a dent on overcrowded classes and long waiting lists. Alas, we also lost two professors last year: Amitabh Chandra to Harvard and Kate Baicker to UCLA (by way of the President's Council of Economic Advisors), leaving us with a net gain of just one. But we remain optimistic and continue to work with the Dean's office in hopes of making a bigger dent on the overcrowding next year.
