In his State of the Union address, President George Bush announced, “We have a serious problem: America is addicted to oil.” Apparently, we were supposed to react to this revelation with astonishment. Either Bush really was the last person in the entire nation to recognize the oil problem, or he just used political Pig Latin to tell us what his administration thinks of our intelligence.

For many students entering higher education, along with the excitement of entering a new stage of life comes a sobering reminder of reality: the process of applying for financial aid. Every year, 10 million students take out Stafford loans in order to fund their college education, and 800,000 parents take out PLUS loans. Considering the trend of rising college tuition rates, these numbers are only likely to increase with time.

I find it deeply disturbing that The Dartmouth actually printed Michael Amico ‘07’s vicious diatribe (“Greeks Must Responsibly Address Homophobia,” Feb. 2). It reads not like an opinion piece, but rather a personal attack on the president of Sigma Phi Epsilon and the fraternity itself.

Yesterday’s article titled “Many Rape incidents occur yearly at College” is chilling (Feb. 6). The number of sexual assaults on campus is high — far too high. Furthermore, there are aspects of the article, and the National Institute of Justice’s “Sexual Victimization of College Women” study, that make little sense.
