For the first time this season, the Dartmouth women’s basketball claimed sole possession of the top spot in the Ivy League. While the Big Green has been the pundits’ unanimous favorite from the beginning, the expectation did not become a reality until this weekend when the Big Green notched back-to-back wins and Princeton lost its first Ivy contest against Brown.

The 1996 New York Yankees, the 1992 Buffalo Bills, the 2004 Boston Red Sox. All of these teams made amazing comebacks in their respective sports. This Friday night, the Dartmouth men’s hockey team joined that pantheon, coming back from a 3-0 deficit to down ECAC rival Yale University 6-4.

As bizarre as it may be to have some students drifting away from their “Camp Dartmouth” courses to contemplate chemistry, what may be most surprising is the number of students fighting off those kinds of thoughts.

Dartmouth women’s hockey struggled through a tough weekend, falling 1-0 to Yale on Friday and tying Brown 3-3 on Saturday. Friday’s loss was particularly painful, snapping a 20-year winning streak against the Bulldogs. On Saturday, Dartmouth jumped out to a 3-0 lead against Brown before giving up three goals in the third, the equalizer coming with just 19.6 seconds left on the clock.

With a 78-68 victory against the Columbia Lions (8-11, 1-5 Ivy) on Saturday evening, Dartmouth men’s basketball closed out a brutal five-game road trip with its first Ivy League win. The Big Green (3-16, 1-5 Ivy) delivered the much-needed triumph after falling to the Cornell Big Red (8-11, 3-2) the previous evening in Ithaca 63-47.

Bad weather continues to be the theme of this year’s Eastern Intercollegiate Ski Association (EISA) carnival circuit. After skiing in the rain on Friday, the Nordic freestyle relay was canceled Saturday morning due to ice and bad snow conditions. Dartmouth finished third in the team standings. The University of Vermont won its own carnival with 755 points, followed closely by Middlebury with 742 points.

Dartmouth track and field was in action this weekend, competing in the aptly-named Dartmouth Indoor Classic at Leverone Field House. The Big Green had a large portion of its athletes competing, and saw strong performances and continued improvement from many of them.

“La vie est belle [Life is beautiful],” avows Eben Clattenburg ‘09 with his trademark goofy grin. Clattenburg, a native of nearby Springfield, Vermont, is the No. 8-positioned player on the Dartmouth men’s squash team. Clattenburg speaks French with a native flourish, having lived in France for two years during high school.

In four days the Winter Olympics will be upon us, with the Opening Ceremonies kicking off 16 days of international competition. When compared to the Summer Olympics, what the Winter Games lack in quantity of sports, they certainly make up for in quality and excitement.
