To the Editor:

There are several factual inaccuracies in Paul Pope's letter to the editor ("Israelis as Intolerant as Palestinians," Jan. 27).

Firstly, the Jaffee Center for Strategic Studies poll found that 46 percent support deportation of Palestinians rather than ethnic cleansing, as the author misrepresented. In addition, that poll is nearly four years old. (http://www.tau.ac.il/jcss/sa/v5n1p4Ari.html)

Secondly, the author claimed that "Although allowed to vote and run for office, [Israeli Arabs] are discriminated against in all areas of life, from housing and employment to land ownership and political activities."

The Israeli Supreme Court ruled in Qadan v. Israel Lands Administration, as well as in many other cases, that "The Jewish character of the state does not permit Israel to discriminate between its citizens."

The author's claims that 46 percent of Israelis support ethnic cleansing of the Palestinians is factually wrong. The claim that Israel discriminates against Israeli Arabs is also false.
